The Forest Department has detained three fishermen for allegedly entering the Sundarbans illegally and catching fish in its rivers and canals.

The operation was conducted late Tuesday night in the Satkhira Range area of the western Sundarbans. A case has been filed against the detained fishermen under the Forest Act.

The detainees were identified as Md Abul Kashem, 45, Mamun Sardar, 30, and Israfil Sardar, 46. Forest officials said they are residents of the Koyra area in Khulna.

According to the Forest Department, forest guards from the Kalagachia Patrol Outpost under the Satkhira Range of the Sundarbans West Forest Division conducted a raid late Tuesday night. They intercepted a fishing boat in a canal near the mouth of the Badurjhuli area of the Kalagachia River.

During the operation, the forest guards seized a dinghy boat, around 2.5 maunds of various species of white fish, and fishing nets.

The Chief Conservator of Forests (CF) has instructed officials to intensify patrols in the Sundarbans to prevent forest-related crimes, officials said.
