Kushtia journalist couple, child killed in Kolkata hotel fire

Nine people were killed in a massive fire at a residential hotel in Kolkata. Four members of the same family, including a journalist couple and their child, were among those killed.
The deceased were identified as Devashish Dutta, 40, Kushtia correspondent of Ajker Patrika and Channel Nine; his wife Afsana Simmin, 25; their three-year-old child Swarna Shish Dutta; and his father-in-law Akram Ali, 64.
The fire broke out at a residential hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in New Market early Wednesday (August 19).
Gazi Mahbub Rahman, former president of Kushtia Press Club and editor of local daily Ajker Alo, confirmed the deaths of the four family members. Devashish Dutta was serving as the executive editor of the newspaper.

Devashish also worked as the Kushtia correspondent of Channel Nine and daily Ajker Patrika.
According to the family, the journalist travelled to Bengaluru, India, on August 3 for treatment of his ailing wife. He is survived by an eight-year-old daughter and his parents.
