Man arrested in Chattogram over alleged blackmail using pornographic videos

Police have arrested a 40-year-old man in Chattogram for allegedly creating pornographic videos through deception and blackmailing victims to extort money.
The accused, identified as Kala Mia alias Kalam Mia, was arrested during a raid in the Bolivhadra, Beltala and Talpatti areas of Ashulia Police Station in Dhaka on Wednesday. Police also seized two Android smartphones and a feature phone from his possession.
According to police, on June 14, an unidentified person contacted Matiur Rahman via WhatsApp from the number 01869122135 and sent him photos of different women while making various inducements. The caller allegedly recorded Rahman during video calls on WhatsApp and IMO without his knowledge. Later, the accused allegedly edited Rahman’s photos and used them to create obscene content before threatening to circulate it on social media. The case alleges that Tk 33,500 was subsequently extorted from Rahman through several bKash numbers by threatening him with reputational damage.
Following the filing of a case, Double Mooring Model Police Station launched an investigation. A team led by Sub-Inspector Md Eman Hossain, with assistance from Ashulia police, conducted the raid and arrested Kalam Mia.
Police said six SIM cards were found in the seized phones, including three registered in the accused’s name. They also said obscene images and videos involving the complainant and other individuals were found on Facebook, WhatsApp and IMO accounts on the devices.
Assistant Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police Aminur Rashid said police records and the Police Clearance and Criminal Records (PCPR) system showed that Kala Mia Bepari alias Kalam Mia had several previous cases against him. After preliminary questioning, the accused was sent to court on Wednesday.
