Dipu Moni was released on a 12-hour parole on Thursday to attend the funeral of her husband, barrister Taufiq Newaz, who died on Wednesday.
She was released from Munshiganj District Jail around 6AM following an application by her daughter Tani Dipaboli.
Dipu Moni, former Education Minister, left the jail in a prison van under police escort and headed for Kalabagan in Dhaka, where her husband’s body was kept.
According to officials concerned, she will remain on parole until 6PM, under tight security.
On Wednesday afternoon, Tani Dipaboli visited her mother at the jail and subsequently applied to the Munshiganj district administration seeking four days’ parole for Dipu Moni. The authorities, however, approved parole for 12 hours.
Dipu Moni’s lawyer, Gazi Faisal, said that after her release, she would go to the family home in Kalabagan, where the body of Taufiq Newaz was kept.
He said the couple had first met at that house.
The lawyer said arrangements had also been made for the funeral prayer at Gulshan Azad Mosque, followed by burial at Banani Cemetery.
