2 from Satkhira’s Kaliganj killed in Kolkata hotel blaze

Two residents of Kaliganj upazila in Satkhira were among those killed in a fire at a residential hotel in Kolkata’s New Market area.

The deceased were Alimuzzaman Saju, son of late Yunus Ali of Bareya village, and Rebati Sarker, wife of Bhavesh Sarker of Tentulia village, both under Tarali Union of Kaliganj.

A pall of grief descended on the area after the families received the death news around 10PM on Wednesday.

Saju’s brother said Saju had travelled to India five or six days ago for treatment of back pain and was scheduled to return home on Wednesday. However, the family was informed around 10PM that he had died in the hotel fire. Saju was unmarried and worked in the fish-farming business.

Rebati Sarker had travelled to India about three months ago for medical treatment and returned home. She went to India again for a follow-up appointment and died in the hotel fire. She was the mother of two children.

The families have demanded that the bodies be repatriated to Bangladesh as soon as possible and called for a proper investigation into the fire and action against those responsible.

Kaliganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Milon Saha confirmed that two of the victims were residents of Kaliganj.
