A Dhaka court on Thursday rejected a complaint seeking legal action against former interim government Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, former Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul and 25 others over the alleged vandalism and arson at the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi 32.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jewel Rana passed the order after recording the statement of complainant Tamanna Chowdhury Priyanka. The court found insufficient grounds to take cognisance of the complaint.

The complaint alleged that on February 5, 2025, the accused directly or indirectly instigated and assisted a large group of people who allegedly attacked the historic residence at Dhanmondi 32 with hammers, sticks and other weapons, set fire to the premises and looted documents, books and other historical materials.

It further alleged that heavy machinery, including bulldozers and excavators, was used to demolish the building overnight and that some of the accused encouraged the vandalism and arson through live broadcasts on YouTube and Facebook.

Among the other accused were former advisers Syeda Rizwana Hasan and Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, former Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, cultural affairs adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, NCP leaders Nahid Islam, Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Mahfuj Alam, Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam, Tasnim Jara and others.

The complainant also alleged that despite prior announcements of the attack, the government authorities concerned failed to take adequate measures to protect the building.
