A 14-year-old schoolgirl was killed and 10 others were injured when a bus carrying students of Beat Model School and College fell into a roadside ditch in Bogura on Thursday afternoon. Three of the injured are reportedly in critical condition and have been admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura.

The deceased was identified as Kaniz Fatema Soha, an eighth-grade student of Beat Model School and College and daughter of Shafiqul Islam of Khamarkandi Westpara in Bogura Sadar. The accident occurred around 5:15pm near Pallimangal brick kiln on the Matidali-Pirgachha road in Bogura Sadar. According to Arup Ratan, an assistant teacher of the institution's English department, the bus left the school premises in the BSCIC area of Bogura shortly before 5pm carrying students heading towards Pirgachha and Sabgram. While overtaking a CNG-run auto-rickshaw near the brick kiln, the driver lost control of the bus, causing it to plunge into the roadside ditch. Soha died inside the bus. Local residents later rescued the students and took the injured to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.

The seriously injured were identified as bus helper Ekramul Haque and students Samiul Mahi and Cynthia Mimmi, according to those concerned. Local residents alleged that bricks brought from a nearby brick kiln had been placed on part of the road for breaking, narrowing the road and making traffic movement risky.

Following the accident, Bogura Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Wazed Ali and Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ibrahim Ali visited the scene. Deputy Commissioner Toufiqul Rahman also inquired about the condition of the injured students. OC Ibrahim Ali said the deceased student's body was in police custody and would be handed over to her family after completion of the legal procedures.
