Police have launched an investigation after a Class X female student was rescued tied up inside a school washroom in Dighalia upazila of Khulna on Thursday (August 20).

The rescue took place around 7:00 PM at Hajee Nayeem Uddin Secondary School in Gazirhat, nearly five hours after school ended.

Construction workers working at an adjacent building heard groaning sounds coming from the locked washroom. Suspicious of the noise, they broke open the padlock and found the girl with her hands, feet, and mouth bound.

The victim was identified as Nandini Roy, daughter of Muktishwar Roy of the area.

Workers initially rushed her to a local village doctor, Mofizur Rahman Shafin. As her condition deteriorated, she was later admitted to a private hospital in Khulna, where she is currently undergoing treatment.

School sources said the institution closed around 2:00 PM on Thursday, after which students and staff left the premises.

Family members claimed that someone struck Nandini on the back of her head as she went to the washroom after school hours. She lost consciousness, after which the miscreants tied her up and locked her inside.

They also alleged that injury and cut marks were found on her body, along with signs of needle pricks. However, authorities have yet to confirm these claims.

Dighalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hawlader Sanowar Hossain Masum said primary evidence suggests the girl was knocked unconscious, taped across her mouth, and bound before being locked in the washroom.

"When she regained consciousness, she started making noises. Construction workers heard the sound and rescued her promptly," the OC added.

Police said the victim spoke to her family members at the hospital. She stated that she could not identify or see any of her attackers.

Investigators are examining all possible angles, including a previous dispute over money related to an NGO run by the victim's father a few years ago.

Medical tests are underway to determine if any other offense was committed against the student. Police have collected evidence from the spot and are questioning school staff, construction workers, and locals.

Members of the Majhirgati police outpost also visited the scene to join the investigation.

"We are investigating who committed the crime, their motive, and how it happened. Efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest those involved," OC Masum said.
