Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arrived at Bangabhaban on Friday evening to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who is set to take oath as the country’s 23rd president.

The prime minister’s motorcade entered Bangabhaban at around 6:50pm on Friday (August 21). Security personnel stationed at the main entrance were seen on high alert as the motorcade arrived. The vehicle carrying the prime minister later entered the presidential palace.

Security was tightened in and around Bangabhaban ahead of the swearing-in ceremony. Additional law enforcement personnel were deployed, while enhanced security measures were put in place for entry into the venue.

Cabinet ministers, senior political leaders, chiefs of the three armed forces, diplomats from various countries and other prominent figures are attending the ceremony.

According to the Constitution, the acting speaker of parliament will administer the oath of office to the new president. Following the oath-taking, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will formally assume the responsibilities of the presidency.

Earlier on Thursday (August 20), Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected president after securing 255 votes in the presidential election held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. His rival, Col (retd) Oli Ahmed, the candidate of an 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami, received 88 votes.

On the same day, the Election Commission issued a gazette notification declaring Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir elected as the country’s 23rd president.

The presidential post fell vacant after President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on July 24. Subsequently, in accordance with the Constitution, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed assumed the role of acting president, while Deputy Speaker Kaiser Kamal took over as acting speaker.

With Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir taking the oath, the terms of the acting president and acting speaker will come to an end.
