Top criminals Chua Selim, Boma Ratan, Joy held in city 

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a top criminal and drug dealer from Geneva Camp Chua Selim, teenage gang ‘Mahi Group’ second-in-command Joy, and listed criminal ‘Boma Ratan’ in separate drives in the capital.

RAB-2 Commander Additional DIG Naimul Hasan confirmed the arrests at a press briefing on Friday and said that Chua Selim, whose real name is Md Selim Ashrafi, was arrested from Geneva Camp on Thursday with a foreign-made 7.65 pistol, two rounds of ammunition and 110 grams of heroin.

He said Selim has 36 cases against him, including seven for murder and attempted murder, 14 under the Narcotics Control Act, 13 under the Special Powers Act, one under the Explosives Act, and one involving rioting and obstructing police in the discharge of official duties. He was previously arrested from Dhanmondi on January 8, 2025.

In a separate drive the same day, RAB-2 arrested Joy, who is accused in 10 cases involving robbery, mugging and drugs, from Chand Udyan under Mohammadpur Police Station.

The RAB commander said Joy and other members of the Mahi Group had long been involved in mugging, extortion and clashes in Dhaka Udyan, Chand Udyan and Nabingagar areas of Mohammadpur, creating fear among residents. Joy had previously been arrested by law enforcement agencies from Mohammadpur on April 24.

On the same day, another RAB-2 team arrested listed criminal Md Ratan alias Boma Ratan, from Bijli Mohalla in Mohammadpur. He is accused in 20 cases involving robbery, preparation for robbery, mugging and arms offences.

RAB official said Boma Ratan had long been leading armed groups involved in robbery and mugging in the Ghaznabi Road, Basila and Geneva Camp areas. He was previously detained with a sharp weapon from Ghaznabi Road on February 19, 2022.

Legal proceedings against the arrestees are underway, while drives to arrest their associates continue.
