The family of a teenage girl in Mongla, Bagerhat, is reportedly facing difficulties after filing a rape case over the alleged assault of the girl.

A group led by Abdul Jabbar, the uncle of the case’s sole accused, Suman Shikder, allegedly attempted to attack the girl’s maternal grandfather’s house On Saturday (August 22) afternoon,
They reportedly threatened the family, saying they would not be allowed to stay in the area unless they withdrew the case. They have also allegedly been intimidating the girl’s maternal uncle, who filed the case, over the phone.

Earlier, on Friday afternoon, the girl’s maternal uncle filed a rape case with Mongla Police Station against Suman Shikder, 35, son of Kanchan Shikder of the Signal Tower area in Ward No. 9 of Mongla Municipality. Police arrested Suman after the case was filed and produced him before a court on Saturday.

According to the case statement, the girl had gone to the Signal Tower area of Ward No. 9 on Sunday (August 16) afternoon to collect water lilies. At that time, Suman Shikder allegedly took her to the bank of a nearby fish enclosure, promising to give her fish. He allegedly raped her there against her will and threatened her with harm if she told anyone about the incident.

The girl kept the incident secret for several days because she was afraid to tell her family members. On Friday, when she fell ill, her maternal aunt asked her what had happened. At one point, the girl disclosed the incident.

The girl’s maternal uncle said, "her parents died when she was very young and that she had grown up in their home. Fearing social stigma and Suman, the girl did not tell anyone about the incident. After the matter came to light, he filed the case. He alleged that Suman’s family members had been threatening him ever since the case was filed, saying, “You won’t be able to stay in the area if you don’t withdraw the case,” and claiming that Suman’s family had influence.

“I came to the hospital with my niece. My younger brother just called and told me that several people, led by Suman’s uncle Abdul Jabbar, went to their house and were verbally abusing them. My elderly parents are terrified and have locked themselves inside the house. They threatened to force us to leave the area if we do not withdraw the case.” he added.

Mongla Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Atikur Rahman said, "the accused had been arrested and sent to court after the case was filed. The girl had also undergone a medical examination at Bagerhat 250-Bed District Hospital.

Regarding the alleged threats against the complainant and his family, the OC said, “No such incident has occurred. However, we are looking into the matter. If anyone is found to have done this, action will be taken."
