A garment factory at Adamjee EPZ in Siddhirganj of Narayanganj declared a day off on Sunday (August 23) as several workers fell ill amid rumors of ghost sightings inside the building.

BEPZA officials and factory managements visited the spot after the incident; however, they found no physical cause behind the incident.

Panic spread among the workers when they returned to work on Sunday morning (August 23) following Saturday's break.

According to factory sources, female workers on the second and third floor of the Universal Menswear Limited’s new building began falling ill continuously on Saturday afternoon. Over 100 workers fell sick, forcing the authorities to send them to BEPZA medical hospital for primary care and shut the factory.

Concurrently, on Sunday morning, several workers fell ill, shortly after starting work. This prompted panic and running among the staff. The management subsequently announced a day-off for Sunday.

Three workers, speaking anonymously, said a female worker claimed to see a ghost on Sunday and began behaving strangely before falling ill. The panic quickly spread as others collapsed.

A male worker noted that over 50 workers fainted while preparing to start work on Sunday morning, forcing their immediate transfer to the BEPZA hospital.

Universal Menswear Limited General Manager Billal Hossain confirmed that nearly 90 per cent of employees joined work on Sunday. "Around 15 to 20 workers unexpectedly fell ill today, so we announced a holiday for the day," he said.

Regarding the ghost claims, Hossain added, “Workers claim they saw ghost, but conscious people cannot believe such things. The illness occurred in multiple areas of the factory, not just one spot. Moreover, we installed AC for the workers comfort. We have not yet identified the real cause of why they are collapsing.”

BEPZA Additional Executive Director at Adamjee EPZ Nasreen said five to seven workers fell ill on Sunday and received medical attention. "Our Executive Director and I inspected the premises personally. We found no ventilation or suffocation issues. While workers mention ghosts, we are working to determine the actual cause," she said, adding that the factory remained closed for the day.
