New sinkhole in Philippines, residents to evacuate

A sinkhole was reported in Purok Indilicio, Barangay Guadalupe, Bogo City, in northern Cebu of Phillippines.
According to filipino media, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) responded on Friday (August 21) to assess the area and implement safety measures.
Authorities cordoned off the site with caution tape and urged residents to maintain a distance of at least 20 meters from the opening. The public was prohibited from dumping garbage, soil, rocks, or debris into the hole to prevent contamination and obstruction.
The city government coordinated with Barangay Guadalupe, where local tanods will monitor the site in shifts. Residents were advised to report any observable changes in the terrain.
Three houses sit near the affected area, with one currently occupied. Although the homes fall outside the 20-meter setback, local authorities encouraged preemptive evacuation as a precaution.
The local government unit (LGU) clarified that the current findings are based on initial observations and do not represent a final geological determination. Geologists must assess the exact cause, depth, underground extent, and soil conditions.
Geological data from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) indicates that sinkholes form in regions underlaid by limestone or carbonate rocks, where groundwater dissolves rock over time to create subterranean cavities. Ground subsidence or collapse occurs when the surface loses structural support.
The city government coordinated with the MGB, whose technical team was scheduled to conduct a detailed assessment and issue recommendations on August 22.
