A Dhaka court on Monday granted bail to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s private industry and investment adviser Salman F Rahman in a case filed over the alleged assault, intimidation and forced resignation of a former CEO of Bangladesh Infrastructure Finance Fund Limited (BIFFL).
Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam granted the bail after a hearing, directing Salman to furnish a Tk500 bond.
The case was filed in September 2024 by former BIFFL CEO SM Formanul Islam, who alleged that he was pressured to approve loans and investment facilities for companies linked to Salman, including Teesta Solar and Beximco Group entities.
According to the complaint, Formanul was pressured to approve a loan of around $185 million for the Teesta Solar project and a Tk200 crore zero-coupon bond investment. He also allegedly faced pressure to provide unsecured loans to Beximco companies despite adverse information in Credit Information Bureau reports.
The complaint further alleged that during a BIFFL board meeting on July 28, 2019, the accused assaulted Formanul after he refused to approve the demanded facilities, threatened him with death and forced him to sign a resignation letter.
The case named 12 accused. Following a Police Bureau of Investigation probe, six people were charged, including former Bangladesh Bank governor Abdur Rouf Talukder, former NBR chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem and Salman F Rahman. Five accused are currently on bail, while Sazzad Hossain remains absconding.
