A Dhaka court on Monday granted bail to lawyer Hammad Emdad Hossain in a case filed over an alleged court proxy in a Tk29 lakh cheque dishonour case.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah granted him bail after he surrendered before the court. The bail will remain in effect until police submit their report.
The case was filed after a woman named Monowara Begum allegedly appeared in court on June 25 posing as accused Nasrin Sikder and sought bail in the cheque dishonour case. She was detained after the court questioned her identity and found discrepancies in her statements and documents.
The court’s bench assistant, Mia Md Ibrahim Khalil Apu, subsequently filed the case against Nasrin, Monowara and lawyer Hammad Emdad Hossain, alleging that they had conspired to mislead the court.
Monowara is currently in jail.
Hammad had obtained an eight-week bail from the High Court on June 30. As the period was nearing expiry, he surrendered before the lower court on Monday and sought fresh bail.
His lawyers argued that he was at the High Court premises on June 25 and was unaware that someone had allegedly used his seal to facilitate the proxy appearance. They denied his involvement in the incident.
The prosecution alleged that Hammad had written his name on the vakalatnama and helped present the fake accused before the court. The allegations remain under investigation.
