German Dev Co-op, BPMI launch renewable energy training

 
In a significant step for Bangladesh’s renewable energy sector, the German Development Cooperation, through the Skills Development for Sustainable Energy Solutions (Skills4SE) project, has partnered with the Bangladesh Power Management Institute (BPMI) to launch specialised training programmes on solar and wind energy.

The initiative, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), aims to equip engineering professionals in the power and energy sectors with the skills needed for a sustainable energy future.

Over the past four months, 77 professionals�"including 64 graduates from solar photovoltaic training and 13 from wind power training�"have successfully completed their programmes, marking a milestone in the collaboration.

To mark the achievement and the strengthening of BPMI’s institutional capacity, an event titled “Just Energy Transition (JET): Opportunities and Challenges in Developing a Skilled Workforce for the Power Sector” was held in Dhaka on Monday, says a press release. 

The event provided a platform to discuss the growing need for specialised skills in the power sector as Bangladesh advances its renewable energy agenda.

The event brought together representatives from the government, utilities, academia, the private sector and development partners to discuss emerging skill requirements in areas including solar photovoltaics, wind power, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and hybrid renewable energy systems.

“A successful just energy transition requires not only sound policies, investment and technology, but also a skilled workforce capable of sustaining modern energy infrastructure. Our collaboration with BPMI demonstrates how we can strengthen local institutions for long-term capacity building,” said Ulrich Kleppmann, Counsellor and Head of Development Cooperation at the German Embassy in Dhaka.

The event featured insights from key stakeholders, including representatives from the Power Division and the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA).
