Students give ‘red card’ to drugs, mobile addiction

Students in Anwara, Chattogram, held up red cards and took an oath against drug abuse, juvenile crime and the misuse of smartphones on Tuesday.

The programme was organised by voluntary organisation Lal Sabuj Unnayan Sangha at Anwara Government Adarsha High School auditorium around 12:30 PM.

Anwara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Mohin Uddin attended the programme as the chief guest, while school headteacher Mohammad Nasir Uddin chaired it.

The speakers stressed character building, staying away from drugs and criminal activities, and responsible use of smartphones.

Mohin Uddin said administrative monitoring alone was not enough to build a drug-free society. Social movements and family awareness were also necessary to protect young people from drugs.

Anwara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Junaid Chowdhury said drug abuse was causing serious social problems in the area. He said police were conducting regular drives against drugs and urged local people to work with the authorities to prevent the problem.

Later, the UNO led the students in taking an oath against drug abuse, juvenile crime and smartphone misuse. They then displayed red cards to express their commitment to preventing social crimes.

Lal Sabuj Unnayan Sangha founder and central president Kawsar Alam Sohel and other representatives also spoke at the programme.

Sohel said the organisation had been working across all 64 districts for 15 years to raise awareness among students. He said the Anwara programme was its 1,942nd initiative.

A similar discussion and oath-taking programme was also held at Tailardwip Barkhain Ershad High School in the upazila on the same day.
