Legendary Singer Dolly Parton dies at 80 after cancer battle

American country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer, marking the end of a seven-decade career that made her one of the most influential singer-songwriters and cultural icons in the United States.
Parton died on Tuesday (August 25) at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, Tennessee, according to a statement from her publicist.
Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, also confirmed her death in an Instagram post. Remembering the legendary artist, he wrote that Dolly was now “living in the light” and reunited with Jesus, her husband Carl, her parents and others who had loved her.
He also paid tribute to her immense influence, saying Parton had opened doors of possibility for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians and dreamers from every background and every continent.
During her remarkable career, Parton wrote and performed hundreds of iconic songs, including “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and “Coat of Many Colors.” With her signature blonde wigs, glamorous outfits and distinctive sense of humor, she became one of the most recognizable figures in American popular culture.
Parton began her life in poverty in a small cabin in Tennessee and eventually rose to the highest levels of the music industry. Her musical journey began in her family church, and at just 13, she made an impression at Nashville’s renowned Grand Ole Opry. Country music star Johnny Cash introduced her there as “a little girl from East Tennessee.”
Beyond music, Parton was widely admired for her philanthropic work. Growing up in a family of 12 children, she later founded Imagination Library, an international nonprofit organization that provides free books to children around the world.
US President Donald Trump expressed deep sorrow over Parton’s death and ordered the national flag to be flown at half-staff for one week in her honor.
Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, said Parton’s true legacy was not simply her fame but her humanity. He described her journey from poverty to becoming a treasured figure in Tennessee and the global music community.
Parton was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999. She won 10 Grammy Awards and received 55 Grammy nominations, cementing her status as one of the most accomplished female artists in Grammy history.
