China agrees to Tk 10,000cr investment to modernise three Dhaka slums

China has agreed to invest nearly Tk 10,000 crore in a housing project aimed at developing modern accommodation for residents of three slums in the capital-- Korail, Sat Tola and Bhashantek.
Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen gave the assurance during a courtesy meeting with LGRD Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan at the Secretariat on Thursday.
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives State Minister Mir Shahe Alam disclosed the information to journalists after the meeting.
He said the Local Government Division had submitted a proposal to develop modern housing facilities for residents of the three slums located in the Gulshan area and the Dhaka-17 constituency.

According to the proposal, the project, estimated to cost around Tk10,000 crore, was submitted to China through the Economic Relations Division (ERD).
The Chinese side has assured Bangladesh that it will consider the proposal, Shahe Alam said.
''If they cannot invest the entire amount at once, they have said they will invest in phases on a priority basis.''
Under the preliminary plan, 20-storey buildings will be constructed with compact residential units measuring around 600 to 650 square feet each. Existing slum residents will be rehabilitated in phases.
The residents will not have to pay monthly rent for the units. However, they will be responsible for electricity, water and other utility costs, the state minister added.
