Art democratic brings 82 works by 14 artists under one roof

An art exhibition titled “Art Democratic”, organised by Galleri Kaya, is bringing together 82 works by 14 modern and contemporary artists, offering visitors a diverse collection spanning several generations, artistic styles and printmaking techniques.

The exhibition features works by prominent artists including Ramkinkar Baij, M F Husain, K G Subramanyan, Jogen Chowdhury and Kalidas Karmakar, alongside artists from later generations. The works were created across different periods, ranging from the 1970s to 2026, creating a visual connection between different eras of South Asian art.

The collection includes lithographs, etchings, woodcuts, serigraphs, mezzotints and wood engravings. Rather than following a single visual language, the participating artists explore people, nature, society and everyday life through their individual approaches. Jogen Chowdhury’s 'Man in Chair', 'Wounded' and 'Interior', for example, present different treatments of the human figure, while K G Subramanyan’s 'Moonlight through Window' offers a more reflective interpretation of an everyday scene.

Nature and river-based life also feature prominently in the exhibition. Kamruzzaman Sagar’s 'Full Moon Night' and 'Raising Moon' explore the moon and night as recurring visual subjects. Nagarbasi Barman’s 'The Riverine Story' and 'The Story of Fishermen' focus on rivers and communities connected to them. Rafiqun Nabi’s 'Goat and the Birds', 'The Crow' and 'Bird' draw on familiar creatures while presenting them through distinctive artistic treatments.

The exhibition also places particular emphasis on printmaking, demonstrating how techniques such as etching, lithography, woodcut, serigraphy and mezzotint contribute to an artwork’s visual character. Variations in texture, line, light, shadow and tonal quality allow each medium to function as an integral part of the artists’ expression.

The title “Art Democratic” reflects the exhibition’s approach of bringing together artists from different generations and artistic traditions without imposing a single style or theme. By placing works from different periods and practices in the same space, the exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to explore multiple perspectives on art and visual expression.
