BNP creates traps everywhere, says NCP’s Sarjis Alam

National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam has accused the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of creating “traps” on various issues and later using them as excuses to claim that others had rejected its proposals.
“BNP’s behaviour is such that it will create traps everywhere. Through these traps, they will ask you to take one or two baits, but you should not take them. Later, they will use that as an excuse, saying, ‘We wanted to give it to them, but they did not take it,’” Sarjis said.
He made the remarks at a press briefing at Nakshi Tower, also known as the Golden Palace Building, on SSK Road in Feni city on Thursday afternoon.
NCP Joint Convener Sarwar Tushar, Joint Member Secretary Saleh Uddin Sifat, and other central and district-level leaders were present at the briefing.
Sarjis said BNP had an opportunity to demonstrate the reflection of Article 70 through the process of electing the president in line with the July Charter, but it did not do so. “When the opposition tried to follow a democratic process, they are now saying they participated in it. They are creating such a trap that whether you participate or not, you are blamed,” he said.
He also criticised BNP’s position on several ordinances that were expected to be turned into laws. According to Sarjis, BNP had earlier said it would review and reform around 16 to 20 ordinances and make them more comprehensive before implementing them as laws for the people.
Referring to the ordinance concerning enforced disappearances, which he said was scheduled to be placed before parliament on Thursday, Sarjis alleged that it had been brought in a manner similar to, or weaker than, the law that existed during the Awami League government.
He also criticised the handling of other human-rights-related ordinances. “Some of the ordinances concerning human rights have been repealed, and they are bringing them back in the same way they existed before,” he said.
Sarjis questioned the mechanism under which complaints about enforced disappearances allegedly involving certain members or agencies of law enforcement would be lodged with those agencies and investigated by them. “There can be no greater farce than this,” he said.
The remarks were made during the press briefing in Feni, where the NCP leaders discussed the party’s position on the presidential election process, political reforms and human-rights-related legislation.
