At least 10 people were injured in two separate clashes between two groups of traders in Kalapara, Patuakhali, following an allegation that a speech-impaired woman was sexually harassed.

Seven of the injured received treatment at Kalapara Upazila Health Complex. Following the clashes, traders announced the closure of all shops at Banati Bazar for an indefinite period.

The clashes took place at Banati Bazar in Laluya union on Thursday night and Friday morning.

According to local sources, the woman was walking past a salon at Banati Bazar on Thursday afternoon when a man identified as Ramoni, 40, allegedly grabbed her by the hand, pulled her inside the salon and attempted to molest her. Several traders reportedly witnessed the incident, triggering tension in the area.

At around 10:00 PM, local traders held a meeting to resolve the matter. They fined the accused Tk6,000 and proposed handing him over to village police. When he objected, a trader named Jewel offered to take responsibility for him.

An argument then broke out between Jewel and Rubel Hawladar, president of the Banati Bazar Traders’ Association. It later turned into a clash, leaving Rubel and two or three others injured.

On Friday morning, traders closed around 350 shops and staged a protest demanding justice over the incident. A second clash broke out between the two groups, leaving at least eight people, including Jewel, Zubayer, Imran, Monir and Kamal, injured.

Hemayet Uddin Hiron, adviser to the traders’ association, said the shops would remain closed indefinitely until the incident was properly resolved.

Kalapara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazrul Islam said legal action would be taken if a written complaint was filed.
