GAIBANDHA, Aug 29: A newborn allegedly declared “stillborn” after being delivered at a hospital in Gaibandha was reportedly taken away and sold, with the family claiming that they recently learned the child is alive, four years after the incident.
According to the family, Akleema Begum, wife of Chan Mia of Madanerpara Village in Fulchhari Upazila, was admitted to Gaibandha Modern Sadar Hospital with labour pains on September 17, 2022.
The family alleged that shortly after the delivery, the newborn was taken away from Akleema. She was later told that she had given birth to a stillborn baby and that the body had been disposed of.
According to the family, Akleema was not even allowed to see whether the newborn was a boy or a girl.
The family recently learned that the child had allegedly not died and was instead sold to someone else for a large sum of money. They claimed that the child is currently alive.
Following the disclosure, a local arbitration meeting was held in the presence of Kanichpara Union Parishad Chairman Sohel Rana Salu. During the meeting, it was allegedly claimed that Mamata Begum, Rashida and Rahima, along with others, were involved in selling the child for money.
The chairman subsequently submitted a written recommendation to Fulchhari Police Station, seeking an investigation and legal action against those allegedly involved.
