Indian traders announce suspension of imports and exports through Hili

Indian traders have announced that import and export through Hili Land Port will remain suspended indefinitely from Sunday (August 30).

They have taken the decision because Hili is lagging behind other land ports in West Bengal in terms of trade competitiveness.

The matter was confirmed to the Banglahili C&F Agents Association through a letter signed by Bikash Chandra Mondal, general secretary of the Indian exporters’ organisation, on Saturday evening (August 29).

Shahinur Islam Mondal, general secretary of the association, said, “We received a letter from the Hili Exporters and C&F Agents Association of India. They said they would stop imports and exports through Hili Land Port from tomorrow (Sunday). They said discriminatory treatment is being imposed here compared with other land ports for exports from India, resulting in a decline in export volumes. They said import and export activities would remain suspended until the problem is resolved.”

Meanwhile, Bangladeshi traders are likely to suffer losses due to the sudden decision by Indian traders. They have called for the issue to be resolved quickly.

Reza Ahmed Bipul, an importer at Hili Land Port, said, “We suddenly learned that imports and exports through Hili Land Port would be suspended from tomorrow. This will have a serious impact on importers in our country. Many trucks loaded with perishable goods are currently on the other side.

If they cannot enter Hili Land Port from tomorrow, importers will suffer significant losses. Hundreds of workers here are also involved in import and export activities, and they too will face financial losses. If the suspension continues for a long time, it will also have an impact on the market.”
