Chinese ambassador invites President Mirza Fakhrul to visit China

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen invited President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to pay a state visit to China at a mutually convenient time.

Yao Wen conveyed the invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping during a courtesy meeting with the president at Bangabhaban on Sunday afternoon.

During the meeting, the ambassador briefed the president on the key developments from the prime minister’s recent visit to China, including progress on laying the foundation stone for the China Economic and Industrial Zone, signing a commercial agreement for the modernisation of Mongla Port and potential cooperation in establishing Mongla Export Processing Zone.

President Mirza Fakhrul said the prime minister’s recent visit would further strengthen and facilitate the friendly relations between Bangladesh and China.

The ambassador said around 30 Chinese companies were expected to invest about $500 million in the China Economic and Industrial Zone, potentially creating around 100,000 jobs for local people.

The two sides also discussed issues of mutual interest, including the Teesta River Integrated Management and Restoration Project, early launch of the foreign minister-level strategic dialogue, and initiatives to introduce a minister-of-state-level ‘2+2’ diplomatic and defence dialogue.

They also discussed exports of jackfruit, mangoes and guavas from Bangladesh to China, solar power, setting up electric vehicle assembly plants, the China-Bangladesh-Myanmar economic corridor and stronger bilateral cooperation to address the Rohingya crisis.

The two sides expressed their commitment to further strengthening Bangladesh-China relations through expanded and multifaceted cooperation.
