Zero tolerance for air ticket syndicates: Aviation minister

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat has said the government will maintain zero tolerance towards artificial ticket shortages, price manipulation and syndicates in the airline ticketing business.

Responding to a question from MP Helen Zerin Khan in Parliament on Sunday, the minister said the measures were aimed at keeping airfares affordable, particularly for Bangladeshi migrant workers.

The government has taken steps to strengthen oversight of travel agencies and airline ticketing, he said, adding that a revised Travel Agency (Registration and Control) Ordinance was promulgated earlier this year to curb syndication and malpractice in the sector.

The government is also moving to amend the Civil Aviation Act to improve transparency in ticket pricing and protect passengers from abnormal fare increases, he added.

Travel agencies have been instructed to clearly display their names, licence numbers and ticket prices on air tickets. Agencies found charging excessive fares or engaging in syndicate activities could face legal action, including cancellation of their registrations, the minister said.

Millat also said the government had decided to provide special benefits to holders of the Probashi Card, including discounts on Biman Bangladesh Airlines tickets and Balaka Lounge services, as well as priority check-in and boarding facilities at airports.
