Mango exports from Chapainawabganj fall sharply despite bumper harvest

Chapainawabganj produced a bumper mango harvest this year, but exports fell sharply, leaving growers and traders disappointed.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, the district produced around 450,000 tonnes of mangoes this year, with about 90 per cent of the produce already marketed.

However, only 26 tonnes of mangoes were exported this year, compared with 153 tonnes last year.

Growers and traders blamed the decline on global conflicts, high air freight charges and a shortage of packing houses, among other challenges.

Additional Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Chapainawabganj Abdul Halim said mango exports had fallen significantly this year but expressed hope that exports would increase in the future.

Growers said they had invested additional money in good agricultural practices to produce export-quality mangoes but failed to secure the expected export market.

They said the poor export performance was hurting growers and depriving the country of potential foreign currency earnings.
