Bring 100g of plastic, get free ticket for Chattogram Zoo: Ctg DC Zahid

Students will be able to enter Chattogram Zoo for free by handing over 100 grams of plastic waste under a new initiative by the Chattogram district administration to promote environmental awareness.
Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mian announced the initiative at a meeting of the District Environment and Forest Development Committee at the DC's conference room on.Monday. He is also the president of the Chattogram Zoo management committee.
A designated collection point will be set up at the zoo, where students can deposit the plastic waste and receive a free entry ticket, he said.
Zahidul said, Students can be encouraged to protect the environment through such initiatives," stressing the need to reduce plastic pollution.
He said, "iscriminate disposal of plastic waste poses a serious threat to the environment as plastic does not readily decompose. It can cause waterlogging, foul odours and create breeding grounds for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of diseases,"e added.
"The environment belongs to everyone, and we all live on this planet. We have nowhere else to live," the DC said, urging people to take greater responsibility for protecting the environment.
The meeting also discussed the use of topsoil from agricultural land for brick production.
Zahidul said fertile topsoil from agricultural land could not be used to make bricks in line with the prime minister's directives. The administration would strictly enforce the relevant laws and take action against violators, he said.
He also encouraged brick kiln owners to use soil legally obtained from canal excavation and development projects instead. Action would be taken against illegal soil cutting from agricultural and other lands, he added.
Highlighting the need to adapt to changing circumstances, the DC cited Kodak as an example. The once-dominant photography company lost its position after failing to adapt to technological changes in time, he said.
"We want to build a safe state, a safe society and a safe environment," Zahidul said, calling for collective efforts to protect the environment.
The meeting was attended by Local Government Division Deputy Director Golam Mainuddin Hasan, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Sharif Uddin, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Pathan Md Saiduzzaman, Department of Environment Chattogram Divisional Director Zamir Uddin and its district deputy director Md Mojahidur Rahman, among others.
Officials from the Forest Department and Public Works Department also attended.
Upazila nirbahi officers from across Chattogram joined the meeting virtually, while leaders of the district Brick Kiln Owners' Association and other stakeholders attended in person.
