We have restored democracy after long struggle: PM

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday said democracy had been restored in the country after a long struggle by his party and its supporters.
He made the remarks during a courtesy meeting with Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary Anda Philip at the Prime Minister's Office at the Secretariat.
Tarique said many BNP leaders and activists had been subjected to enforced disappearance and killing during the party's long struggle for democracy, while around four million party leaders and activists had faced what he described as false cases.
“After a long struggle, we are very happy that we have been able to restore democracy in the country,” he said, adding that the February 12 election had helped put the country back on a democratic path.
He said the BNP had restored both multi-party and parliamentary democracy in Bangladesh and remained firmly committed to democratic governance.
“We believe sustainable progress and development can be ensured only through an effective and strong democratic system,” he said, adding that his government was working to protect the constitutional rights of every citizen and ensure essential public services.
Anda Philip praised Tarique's leadership and his regular participation in parliamentary sessions, saying it reflected his commitment to parliamentary democracy.
She also praised initiatives outlined in the BNP's election manifesto, particularly those related to education and community-based programmes, and expressed the IPU's interest in strengthening cooperation and exchanging experiences with Bangladesh's Parliament.
The meeting also discussed women's empowerment. Tarique said his government considered women's empowerment a priority and planned to provide free education for women up to the honours level and introduce stipends for female students.
He added that one of the main objectives of the Family Card programme was to make women financially independent and increase their participation in family decision-making.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs-1 Humayun Kabir and State Minister for Foreign Affairs-2 Shama Obaed Islam were present at the meeting.
