Govt announces incentive package for rooftop solar power

Government has launched a major initiative to promote renewable energy and ensure sustainable energy security by announcing a special incentive package for rooftop solar power systems with battery storage.

The government issued a gazette notification in this regard on Tuesday afternoon.

Taking current market rates and tender prices into consideration, the Power Division set the maximum production cost of rooftop solar power with battery storage at Tk 8 per unit.

Under the special incentive package, a 20 per cent profit and an 11.25 per cent premium have been added to the production cost, fixing the tariff at Tk 10.50 per unit. If a consumer installs a system below the set cost, the saved amount will be treated as their profit.

According to the Net Metering Guidelines 2025, consumers who install rooftop solar systems by February 28, 2027, and supply surplus electricity to the national grid after personal consumption will receive Tk 10.50 per unit for three years until February 28, 2030.

Power distribution companies will maintain consumer records, measure the amount of electricity supplied to the grid, and store incentive-related data. The incentive payments will be transferred directly to consumers' bank or mobile banking accounts and will not be paid in cash under any circumstances.

This incentive will not apply to systems installed after February 28, 2027.

Solar panels, batteries, inverters, meters, and related equipment used in the systems must comply with technical standards set by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA).

Policy support will be provided through the One-Stop Service Centre established by the Power Division, as well as district and upazila offices of power distribution companies. The notification stated that the directive takes effect from September 1, 2026.
