Separate pay scale to be announced for teachers: Education Minister Milon

KHULNA, Sept 1: Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon, MP, said on Tuesday that the government plans to introduce a separate pay scale for teachers as part of efforts to improve the education sector.

 “Today’s students are the Bangladesh of tomorrow. Therefore, we have to turn them into skilled human resources,” Milon said.

He was speaking at the opening of ‘University Day-2026’, marking the 23rd anniversary of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology’s transformation into a university.

Milon said the then Prime Minister Khaleda Zia transformed four educational institutions into universities in 2003, including what is now KUET. He urged graduates to use their knowledge and skills to serve the country.

The minister said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expressed interest in rewarding 1.16 lakh students who achieved the GPA-5. He also said work was underway to provide bicycles to girls to help them pursue higher education.

Milon said the government plans to recruit 77,000 teachers soon, adding that education’s share of gross domestic product would be increased from 2 percent to 5 percent.

KUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Masud presided over the event.

Jatiya Sangsad Whip Rakibul Islam Bakul called KUET a politics-free campus and said political activities would not be allowed there. He urged the minister to arrange a modern medical centre and 5 to 10 electric buses for the university.

The day-long programme included a rally, exhibitions, discussions, tree planting, project presentations, laboratory visits and a football match between teachers and students. A cultural programme was held in the evening.
