Hridoy smashes triple century to rewrite Bangladesh first-class record

Towhid Hridoy etched his name in Bangladesh cricket history on Wednesday, becoming only the third Bangladeshi batter to score a first-class triple century and the first to achieve the feat overseas.
Hridoy reached the landmark while playing for Bangladesh A against South Africa A in the second four-day match in Potchefstroom.
Resuming the final day unbeaten on 204, Hridoy completed his historic triple century with a couple off the first ball of the 182nd over of Bangladesh A’s first innings.
Bangladesh A were 611-8 when this report was filed, in reply to South Africa A’s 512. With little time remaining in the match, the contest appeared destined for a draw.
Before Hridoy, only Tamim Iqbal and Raqibul Hasan had scored first-class triple centuries for Bangladesh. However, both achieved the feat on home soil.
Tamim made an unbeaten 334 for East Zone against Central Zone at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur during the 2020 Bangladesh Cricket League. In doing so, he surpassed Raqibul’s record of 313, scored for Barishal against Sylhet in a 2007 National Cricket League match in Fatullah.
Interestingly, Raqibul was present at the ground when Tamim broke his record.
Hridoy’s monumental innings also saw him become the highest-scoring batter for Bangladesh A in first-class cricket. He surpassed Shahriar Hossain’s previous record of 218, scored against the Defence Housing Authority in Karachi in 2003.
Shahriar had previously been the only batter to score a double century for Bangladesh A in first-class cricket.
Hridoy has also become only the second overseas batter to score a first-class triple century in South Africa. The first was England great Dennis Compton, who made 300 for MCC during the 1948-49 tour.
Hridoy’s landmark innings has therefore added another historic chapter to Bangladesh’s first-class cricket record book.
