Truck hits three garment workers in Narayanganj, woman killed

A female garment worker was killed while two others got injured in a truck hits on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Sonargaon, Narayanganj.

The incident took place at around 9 PM near the Madanpur region. At first the identity of the deceased and the injured was not known.

As per eyewitnesses and police reports, workers of Jahin Textile Garments were crossing the road from the Dhaka lane to the Chattogram lane after their work shifts, when suddenly a speeding truck hit them and resulted in the death of one female worker and injury of the other two.

The fellow workers rescued the two injured workers and brought them to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. They detained the truck involved in the accident.

Protesting the death, the garment workers blocked the highway at about 10 PM, which resulted in severe traffic congestion that spread to nearly 15 kilometers long between Chittagong road to Madanpur.

Passenger Yasin Arafat said, “The traffic congestion was beyond Madanpur. I had to wait for a long time before taking an auto-rickshaw and traveled in the other direction".

Juhlash Uddin, the in-charge of the Shimrail Highway Police Camp, reported that the police were trying to reduce the traffic jam. Kanchpur Highway Police Station OC Shamim Sheikh also said that the traffic was being cleared.

Mohammad Jamal Uddin, the OC of the Bandar Police Station, reported that the workers had been moved out of the highway and the truck driver had been arrested.
