Communal harmony essential for true democracy: Nahid Islam

National Citizen Party (NCP) convenor and Chief Whip of the Opposition Nahid Islam stated that without achieving communal harmony, there can be no true democracy in Bangladesh.

The statement was made on Friday morning while exchanging greetings with members of the Hindu community at Dhakeshwari Temple during Janmashtami celebrations.

He pointed out that it is the duty of democracy to provide all communities with their right to celebrate festivals and practice their religions. At the same time, he emphasized the need to build up the justice system and democratic system to end the culture of impunity.

According to him, it is the duty of all political parties, including both ruling and opposition groups, to maintain peace, harmony, and good will.

He added that Bangladesh has a rich history of coexistence in religion and culture and that the country’s heritage should be safeguarded through such interactions.
