A woman and her five-year-old daughter died after allegedly drinking toilet cleaner in Narsingdi’s Madhabdi, while her two-and-a-half-year-old son remains hospitalised in critical condition.
The incident occurred at Anandi in Madhabdi municipality around 1:15pm on Wednesday, according to Madhabdi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Kamal Hossain.
Police said the woman, identified as Urmi, 22, had an altercation with her husband, Milon, a driver, over a family matter. At one point, Milon allegedly assaulted her with a shoe. Urmi then left their rented home with her two children.
Later, she allegedly drank toilet cleaner and gave it to her two children. Locals rescued them and took them to a nearby hospital. They were later transferred to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared Urmi dead.
The two children were subsequently sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated. Doctors there declared five-year-old Mim dead, while Abir Hossain, 2½, was admitted to the emergency department and remains under treatment.
A case was filed by Urmi’s mother, Nargis Begum, with Madhabdi Police Station. Police arrested Milon and produced him before a Narsingdi court on Friday after initial questioning.
Police said legal proceedings in the case are underway.
