Auto-rickshaw driver beaten to death with brick in Demra, accused held

An auto-rickshaw driver was allegedly beaten to death with a brick in Dhaka’s Demra early Friday following a dispute over Tk 150, police said.

The deceased was identified as Md Delwar Hossain, 45, son of late Razzak Mia of Kamarbhog area.

Police said Delwar was allegedly attacked by Rony, a resident of the same area, after the two got into an argument over Tk 150 that Delwar reportedly owed him.

Following the incident, locals detained Rony and handed him over to police after beating him. He is currently undergoing treatment under police custody at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The incident took place in the Kamarbhog area between around 2am and 5am, according to police. Delwar was found critically injured at the scene and was later declared dead. His body was sent to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.

Demra Police Station Sub-Inspector Shital Kumar said the two men were previously acquainted and regularly communicated with each other.

“Delwar reportedly had Tk 150 to collect from Rony. An argument over the money escalated into a fight, during which Rony allegedly struck Delwar on the head with a brick,” the officer said.

Police said the exact circumstances behind the killing would be established after investigation and the autopsy report. They are also investigating whether anyone else was involved and locating the brick allegedly used in the attack.

Police also said they had received preliminary information that Rony was involved with drugs, but the matter is being investigated.
