The Hatia unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has held a press conference protesting comments by Noakhali-6 MP Abdul Hannan Masud regarding alleged excessive toll collection at several ferry ghats in Hatia.

The press conference was held at the BNP's party office in Hatia upazila headquarters on Saturday afternoon. In a written statement, former municipal BNP president Mokarram Billah Shahadat claimed that although excessive tolls were being collected at several ghats, no BNP leader or activist was involved in the practice.

He alleged that Haji Abul Kashem had taken the lease of Nalchira Ghat and Newaz Uddin had taken the lease of Bangla Bazar Ghat. According to Shahadat, both are close to Hannan Masud and are involved in National Citizen Party (NCP) politics. He also alleged that they had previously been involved in Awami League politics. He claimed that the lease of Chairman Ghat had been given to a person from neighbouring Subarnachar upazila.

Shahadat further alleged that the BNP had informed the upazila administration after passengers were charged Tk 10 instead of the prescribed Tk 5 at the ghats. He said the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) subsequently summoned the lessees of two ghats, instructed them to collect Tk 5 and took written undertakings from them over the alleged violation. However, he claimed that Tk 10 was again being collected from passengers.

The BNP leader called on the local administration to take stronger action to stop the alleged irregularities.

Several BNP and affiliated organisation leaders were present at the press conference, including Sabbir Uddin, Ashiq Iqbal, Mohammad Fahim Uddin, Momin Ullah Russell, Kawsar Mostafa, Suman Talukdar, Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Riaz Mahmud, Abdul Halim, Shariful Islam Dukhu and Farhad Hasan.

Abdul Hannan Masud is the NCP's senior joint chief coordinator and the MP for Noakhali-6 (Hatia).
