Twelve students fell ill after eating school feeding meals at Police Line Government Primary School in Chapainawabganj on Sunday, with seven admitted to the district hospital.

The students of Classes IV and V were served bread and eggs supplied by development organisation GAK at noon. Several students reportedly fell ill shortly after eating the food.

They were taken to Chapainawabganj 250-bed District Hospital, where seven students"three boys and four girls"were admitted after receiving initial treatment.

Dr Zamir Md Hasibul Sattar, superintendent of the district hospital, said the students were initially suspected to have suffered food poisoning. The exact cause would be known after medical examinations are completed.

Chapainawabganj Civil Surgeon Dr AKM Shahab Uddin said he was visiting GAK’s office along with the upazila nirbahi officer and representatives of the primary education office to assess the situation.

This is not the first time students have fallen ill after consuming food supplied by GAK. Similar incidents were reported at several primary schools on at least three previous occasions.

The organisation was fined Tk 40,000 and a case was filed against it over supplying rotten food, according to the report.
