Body of Israeli drone strike victim returned to Satkhira

The body of an Israeli drone strike victim in Lebanon has returned home to Satkhira after almost four months. The family is no longer receiving any government grants due to lack of insurance.
The body of Shuvo Das, a resident of Kalaroa in Satkhira who was killed in an Israeli drone attack in the conflict-ridden southern region of Lebanon, has finally reached the country.
After a long 3 months and 25 days, he reached his village, Sripatipur, Koyla Union, Kalaroa Upazila, at 10 am on Sunday morning. At this time, the atmosphere turned heavy with the grief of the locals and relatives.
Shuvo Das was the eldest son of Suranjan Das, a poor van driver from Sripatipur village, and Shikha Das, a rice mill worker. The family had the highest hopes for Shuvo among its four siblings. Shuvo’s untimely departure would be a heavy blow to the family.
On May 11, Israel carried out a drone attack on a bread-carrying vehicle in the Zebdin area of Nabatieh district in southern Lebanon. Shuvo Das of Kalaroa lost his life on the spot, before him Shafiqul Islam of Bhaluka Chandpur in Satkhira Sadar Upazila, and Nahidul Islam of Kadakati in Ashashuni Upazila.
While the bodies of Shafiqul Islam and Nahidul Islam Nahid were able to be brought home on June 27, uncertainty arose over bringing Shuvo Das' body due to various administrative complications including the suspension of Biman flights. Finally, after a long three months and 25 days, his body reached his homeland.
His relatives said that about three years ago, his family sold two hundred acres of land and cattle in their home to alleviate the family's hardships and sent Shuvo to Lebanon by taking out loans. Shuvo's only goal was to free himself from the strain of driving his father's van and his mother's hard work in the rice field. But an Israeli drone attack shattered that dream.
Shuvo Das' death is now a cause for mourning in the village of Sripatipur. His family is distraught over the loss of their only son who can earn a living and the thought of paying off their debts.
Meanwhile, Shuvo Das' body was buried at the local crematorium at around 12:30 pm following family and religious customs.
Moin Uddin, councilor of the Khulna divisional office of the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Foreign Affairs, said that two checks of Tk. 85,000 were given by the government last night. He initially said that he would receive another Tk. 3 lakh this month and another Tk. 10 lakh for life insurance a few months later, but later said that he won’t be receiving any more government assistance as he did not have insurance at the time of his departure.
Ariful Islam, Upazila Executive Officer of Kalaroa, said that Shuvo's family was given an additional incentive of Tk. 35,000 for carrying the body and Tk. 50,000 for dying in the war. He could not say whether he would receive anything else later.
