Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim will serve as the president of the currently banned Bangladesh Awami League (BAL) in the absence of ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Hasina disclosed this in an interview with Indian media outlet The Wall, stating that Sheikh Selim is the most senior Presidium member and the right person to lead the party. She also clarified that her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, is not directly involved in politics.

During a detailed conversation with The Wall's Executive Editor Amal Sarkar, Hasina shared her views on returning home, personal security, the Bangladesh situation, bilateral relations with India, and the future of her party.

The ousted leader expressed her desire to return to Bangladesh but raised severe concerns about her personal safety. She added that she does not want to put others at risk by instructing them to arrange her return, as their lives would also be in danger.

Hasina questioned New Delhi's stance on supporting Bangladeshi elections and the return of Tarique Rahman. She stressed the importance of regional understanding between the two neighbouring nations, emphasizing that relations should be built on regional cooperation and mutual interests rather than military alliances.
