Female footballers in Mymensingh’s Nandail detained an easy-bike driver accused of attempting to rape a 16-year-old player and handed him over to police on Sunday.
The accused, Mahmudul Islam, 32, is the son of Shamsul Haque of Sherpur Union.
According to the victim’s complaint, she was returning home in an easy-bike after football practice at Chandipasha Government High School on September 1 when the other passengers got off.
The driver allegedly took her to an isolated place and attempted to rape her. She managed to resist him but did not report the incident at the time as she did not know him.
She later began looking for the accused while travelling to and from practice. On Sunday evening, she spotted him near the field after training and informed her teammates.
The footballers then detained Mahmudul and handed him over to police.
Confirming the incident, Nandail Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mojahidul Islam said the victim had filed a case against the accused over the alleged attempted rape.
The accused was sent to court on Monday morning.
