FBI gives ACC info about Saifuzzaman, wife’s US assets

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has provided the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) with information and documents relating to the movable and immovable assets allegedly held in the United States by former Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury and his wife, Rukmila Zaman.

ACC spokesperson Akhtarul Islam disclosed the development on Monday.

He said the ACC had sought information from US authorities as part of its investigation into allegations of illegal assets held abroad by Saifuzzaman and his wife.

“In response to our request, the FBI has provided detailed documents and information about their assets in the United States,” Akhtarul said.

ACC sources said the information would be scrutinised as part of the ongoing investigation into the couple’s overseas assets and their sources.

Meanwhile, the commission has intensified its investigation into alleged irregularities and corruption surrounding the Bangladesh government’s power purchase agreement with India’s Adani Power.

An ACC investigation team has also recommended an inquiry against former Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office Dr Ahmed Kaikaus over his alleged involvement in the agreement and separate allegations of acquiring assets beyond known sources of income, the sources said.

The commission is examining the circumstances surrounding the power purchase agreement, including the roles of officials involved in the process, as part of its broader anti-corruption inquiry.

The latest developments come as the ACC expands its investigation into allegations of corruption and illicit asset accumulation involving former senior officials and politically influential individuals.
