Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Supreme Court Bar Association President Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon exchanged words during a hearing at the Appellate Division on Tuesday, following a dispute over a Tk 500,000 fine imposed on a lawyer for allegedly withholding information.

The incident took place during a hearing before the Appellate Division bench headed by the chief justice.

At one point, Khokon told the chief justice that lawyers’ incomes had declined since he took charge as chief justice. The remark led to an exchange between the two.

At one stage, the chief justice and other judges of the Appellate Division left the courtroom.

Khokon later confirmed the incident to journalists, saying the entire Appellate Division bench led by the chief justice left the courtroom following their exchange.

He said he had told the chief justice during the hearing that lawyers’ incomes had declined since he became chief justice, which led to an argument between them.

The chief justice and the other judges left the courtroom around noon amid the exchange, he added.
