No iPhone 18 tomorrow: Apple breaks a decade-old tradition

Apple will not unveil its standard iPhone 18 at its upcoming annual keynote event tomorrow, marking the longest gap between mainline flagship releases in the tech giant's history.

The company has split its traditional autumn line-up, pulling the base iPhone 18, the budget-friendly iPhone 18e, and the second-generation iPhone Air from the showcase. These three models are now expected to arrive around March 2027.

The shift creates an 18-month gap following the iPhone 17 release, surpassing the previous record 15-month gap between the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s.

Tomorrow's "Surprise and Shine" keynote event will instead focus exclusively on high-end hardware. The line-up features the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple's first foldable device, likely named the iPhone Ultra.

The Pro models will retain display sizes similar to their predecessors while adding internal upgrades, including a variable-aperture main camera, a smaller Dynamic Island, and an in-house C2 cellular modem.

Available in dark cherry, black, silver, and light blue, the Pro series is projected to cost $100 to $300 more than last year's models.

The new passport-style foldable iPhone Ultra is slated to feature 12GB of RAM, an A20 Pro chip, dual rear cameras, and Touch ID instead of Face ID. Global price forecasts range from $2,000 to $2,500.

The 90-minute keynote will stream live on Wednesday (9 September) at 10:00 AM Pacific time (9:00 PM UAE time). It marks the first launch fronted by new Chief Executive John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook on 1 September. Alongside the flagship phones, Apple is expected to introduce the Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4, and two AirPods 5 variants.

Pre-orders for the Pro models are anticipated to open on Saturday (12 September), shifting from Apple's traditional Friday slot to avoid 11 September. In-store availability is scheduled to begin on Friday (18 September).
