Shipping Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam on Tuesday (September 8) announced a government plan to integrate the island district of Bhola with the country's mainland through roads and bridges within the next four to five years.

He made the remarks as the chief guest during the launch of the experimental "Dhaka-Ilisha Ferry Service" at the Kanchpur ferry ghat in Siddhirganj at 5:30 PM.

The Minister noted that the experimental ferry service on the Kanchpur-Ilisha route has already generated strong public interest among passengers, private vehicle owners, and freight transporters. In response to the high demand, discussions are underway to increase the number of ferries, enhance service quality, maintain order, and fix reasonable fares.

He added that steps are being taken to make Dhaka's circular waterway routes and water bus services more passenger-friendly. Timely operations, comfortable travel conditions, and seamless integration between water and road transport will boost route popularity and minimize financial losses.

Additionally, the government has taken steps to repair monsoon-damaged roads and address unplanned sand extraction near bridges. Strict legal action will be taken against illegal sand miners to protect infrastructure.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Chairman ATM Abdul Bari, Director (Administration) Md Robiul Alam, Director (Commercial) SM Ashiquzzaman, Director (Technical) Captain Muhammad Hasemur Rahman Chowdhury, and Director (Finance) Sheikh Md Nasim were present at the event, alongside other officials.
