NCP to field candidates in every union: Sarjis

The National Citizens Party (NCP) is preparing to field a single candidate in every union across the country in the upcoming Union Parishad elections, said its Chief Organiser (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after an organisational coordination meeting and political workshop organised by the NCP’s Barguna district unit at a hotel in Barguna town on Tuesday afternoon.
Sarjis said the party was working to field candidates independently in all 4,600 unions across Bangladesh. It has already announced candidates for upazila, municipality and city corporation elections and will soon announce its candidates for Union Parishad elections.
“We hope NCP candidates will contest independently in every union in the next local government elections and win,” he said.
Referring to the BNP government completing six months in office, Sarjis said the government could no longer cite being a “new” or “child” government as an excuse for failing to address problems.
He said the BNP should acknowledge existing problems and work with other political parties to resolve them. The NCP, he added, remained willing to cooperate if the BNP recognised issues such as extortion, abuse of power in the administration and politicisation.
Sarjis also said people who voted for a particular party or supported it without committing any crime could join any political party, including the BNP, Jamaat or NCP. However, those involved in crimes must face justice, he said.
He urged the BNP not to provide protection to criminals for electoral or political considerations, warning that such compromises could eventually backfire on the party.
Calling on the prime minister to focus on delivering results rather than promises and presentations, Sarjis said the government should demonstrate that its plans had been translated into action.
Commenting on the reported harassment of actor Azmeri Haque Badhon, he said those who had committed crimes or were recognised associates of the former authoritarian regime should be brought to justice. He criticised the lack of visible action against those who allegedly harassed Badhon and called for legal measures against them.
He also raised concerns over the attack on Alif, who lost an eye after being struck with an iron rod. Sarjis said no one had yet been arrested over the attack and urged the BNP not to protect offenders because of their political affiliations.
“If the BNP starts protecting criminals simply because they are party activists, the party will eventually become a haven for criminals,” he said.
NCP Joint Convener Golam Sarwar Tushar, Assistant Organising Secretary Al Nahian, Central Organiser Mohiuddin Rony and Barishal divisional organiser Advocate Mujahidul Islam, among other district and local leaders, were present at the programme.
