PIROJPUR, Sept 8: Out of the total 989 posts of head-teachers at the primary schools across seven upazilas of the district, 731 posts are lying vacant, and only 258 head-teachers are currently working.
As per official records, head-teachers on duty include 15 at Kawkhali Upazila, 41 at Nazirpur, 35 at Pirojpur Sadar, 47 at Bhandaria, 50 at Mathbaria, 41 at Nesarabad, and 29 at Zianagar.
Besides, a total of 539 posts of assistant primary teachers are lying vacant across seven upazilas in the district. Out of 4,959 sanctioned teaching posts, only 4,420 teachers are currently available at 989 government primary schools in Pirojpur.
Upazila Assistant Primary Education Officer Bishawjit Karmaker said that the shortage of teachers hampers the education process in maintaining quality education at the primary level.
District Primary Education Officer (DPEO) Mollah Baktiar Rahman said vacant assistant primary teacher posts include 31 at Kawkhali Upazila, 102 at Nazirpur, 50 at Pirojpur Sadar, 100 at Bhandaria, 146 at Mathbaria, 63 at Nesarabad, and 47 at Zianagar.
The DPEO also said school administration and teacher accountabilities mostly depend on head-teachers, so it is a vital post for a primary school.
