A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered the seizure and freezing of around £5.3 million (Tk 85 crore) held in Jersey in the name of a company allegedly owned by Nasa Group Chairman and former EXIM Bank Chairman Nazrul Islam Mazumder and his wife Nasrin Islam.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Shahjahan Kabir passed the order after hearing an application filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to the ACC, the money is deposited in a UBS Bank account in Jersey under One Investments Limited, a company incorporated in the Isle of Man in 2019. The agency said the account contained £5.30 million as of August 6.
The ACC alleged that Nazrul, his family members and associates obtained loans of around Tk 35,000 crore from 26 banks through irregularities and siphoned off part of the money abroad.
