Mac Allister, Szoboszlai score as Liverpool edge Atletico

Liverpool secured a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Atlético Madrid at Anfield to launch their UEFA Champions League campaign, powered by a second-half long-range strike from Alexis Mac Allister.
Atlético Madrid took an early lead through Marcos Llorente before Dominik Szoboszlai equalized for Liverpool shortly before the interval. Mac Allister completed the host's comeback in the second half with a strike from outside the penalty area.
The victory marked a successful Champions League debut for Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, though the win was tempered by a calf injury to new signing Bradley Barcola, who was forced off prematurely.
Liverpool pressed aggressively from the opening whistle, with Alexander Isak testing the defense following a pass from Szoboszlai. However, Atlético capitalized on Liverpool's high defensive line during a swift counterattack.
Making his first start of the season, Julián Álvarez set up Llorente, who broke through the backline to finish past goalkeeper Alisson Becker. The goal marked another memorable Anfield moment for Llorente, who previously scored twice at the stadium against Liverpool during the 2020 Champions League campaign.
Alisson subsequently denied a long-range effort from Álvarez to keep Liverpool within striking distance.
Barcola came close to scoring on his Anfield debut, first being denied by Jan Oblak before firing wide from a Florian Wirtz delivery.
Liverpool leveled the score in the 40th minute when a touch from Ronald Araújo found Szoboszlai, who placed a clinical low strike into the bottom corner.
The hosts completed the turnaround early in the second half when Mac Allister unleashed a powerful left-footed strike from outside the box, beating Oblak to give Liverpool the lead.
Liverpool nearly extended their advantage, but Robin Le Normand executed a timely tackle to deny Isak a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
Iraola’s side controlled the closing stages to secure all three points, with team staff now monitoring the severity of Barcola’s calf injury ahead of upcoming fixtures.
