The government will launch a nationwide measles vaccination drive on September 25, said Health Minister Sardar Shakhawat Hossain on Thursday, blaming the previous government for failing to maintain adequate vaccine stocks.

The minister made the remarks at an event in the capital's Dhanmondi.

He said a large consignment of measles vaccines had already arrived in the country, with another shipment expected on September 17.

The health minister also said the incumbent government bears no responsibility for recent measles-related deaths.

On the dengue situation, Shakhawat Hossain said controlling mosquitoes was extremely difficult in a country where stagnant water is widespread.

He said hospitals outside Dhaka have arrangements to treat dengue patients, but many patients still travel to the capital as soon as they are diagnosed with the disease.

Responding to complaints that doctors themselves refer dengue patients to Dhaka, the minister said a sense of fear among some doctors contributes to the practice, prompting them to send patients to the capital rather than treating them locally.
